I gym here practically daily...it's a little outdated and could definitely use some renovation, especially in the weight room. It's pretty cramped, mostly during peak hours which I try to avoid. I usually go around 5:30am...always the same oldies in there, they're nice and respectful I suppose. I mostly keep to myself. I wish there were more padded space, for stretching and such...it seems clean mostly. I like the cardio machines, and towels are always available It's pretty expensive though. My boyfriend and I pay 130/mo...most of the staff have snooty attitudes, and I've gotten massages there that aren't worth what you pay for Mostly it suits my needs. I get my pump and go :)
I really enjoy having a membership at a gym that is highly recognized as meeting the needs of its customers. However, I have a membership at the Palmer facility and would really like to see more classes offered on the weekend. Of course, I use the gym more in the winter months but if there were classes on the wkd. I would be more apt. to utilize the gym year round and bring friends~ Overall, friendly staff and clean environment.
The addition of more plate loaded machines in the East club would be appreciated, but the space is limited, so it is understandable if that is not feasible. However, while there are an adequate number of weights, the addition of 100 lb. plates for the Leg Press and V-Squat machine is needed. If both of those machines are utilized at the same time by individuals who can squat/press at least 200 lbs., then there quickly becomes a shortage of 45lb. plates for everyone else. During non-peak hours this is not much of a concern, but during peak hours it is a constant annoyance that could be eliminated with the addition of 4-8 100lb. plates.
I love the variety of classes that are offered, and the various times. I'm not an early morning or evening exerciser, so I appreciate the mid morning choices! The locker room updates are amazing, they were worth waiting through construction. My only complaint is the cardio room could use some attention. A few unmarked, out dated, broken machines and the ventilation is horrible. It's either steamy hot or unbelievably stinky. Even a handful of fans along the walls I think would really help. Other than that I love being able to go to the Alaska Club and do something good for myself!!
for the price it needs to be clean all the time!
Big club. Super expensive. Great kids play ground. Very good classes even ballet. They have towels but if you will come during pick time being your towel. Clean. You can buy gym apparel there and drinks if you forgot yours. I loved classes. Plus they have parties at the gym. And I ran Marathon with some women from club.
The only reason why I have alaska club membership is because of the tennis courts. Besides that, I would not have an alaska club membership because the hot tub, sauna constantly break and some of the equipment does to. Also, when I had a personal trainer appointment that I had to cancel because something came up. It's true it was only a few hours in advanced which I apologized for but I wanted to reschedule an appointment. I called the trainer he/she didn't pick up so left a message with my name and phone number. She/he never contacted me back, it has been about 2 months. The gym is not worth spending 150$ a month because of easily broken equipment and the trainers that don't contact you back for 2 months. Customer service at the front desk is great though
I highly recommend a membership at The Alaska Club. I've been a member for 20 years and have heard complaints about the price and the value you get for the membership. I strongly disagree -- the value you'll get is dependent solely on the amount you utilize your membership and your motivation to choose fitness as a lifestyle. For the cost of a gold membership, I pay less than what it costs to buy a latte a day on my way to work. I utilize the club a minimum of five days per week. And, with a gold membership, it offers me the convenience of visiting locations across town, as well ***, ***and ***. It has the newest and largest variety of equipment, as well as myriad group fitness classes for cross training purposes. It's true that there are other clubs that cost less, however, as with anything else you get what you pay for. The Alaska Club offers the BEST value for a membership.
I was down from Fairbanks for Thanksgiving week, and found the East location both convenient and friendly. The staff was helpful, and childcare was available, and the area clean and safe. Plenty of equipment, and room to work out, and nice steam room to finish up before showering. The price is higher than clubs I've patronized down south, but we are in Alaska, and at least this organization provides opportunities to exercise at multiple locations, including Fairbanks, where I normally go. They do seem a bit overstaffed in their sales dept.!!!!
A wonderful place to work. Great family fitness facilities.
